North West Universities to set up Enterprise Champions

Find out how the North West is planning to tap into the entrepreneurial talent of students and graduates in five of the regions Universities.

Following the success of the Enterprise Champion project at Liverpool John Moores University the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) has approved £930,000 to see the champions established in a further five Universities.

Funding from NWDA will see permanent champions established in:
• The University of Liverpool
• University of Salford
• University of Cumbria
• Manchester Metropolitan University and
• Further development of the project at Liverpool John Moores University

Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive of the NWDA said “We have an enterprise gap in the Northwest, we need more business start-ups to help reach the national average and boost our GVA.  This exciting new project will support fresh ideas at an early stage and encourage graduates to take their entrepreneurial plans forward to profit making businesses.”

Students and graduates from the Universities will soon benefit from the support of Enterprise Champions who aim to help them develop an enterprising mind set to realise their full potential and become successful entrepreneurs. Individuals who show entrepreneurial ideas and commitment will be offered guidance and practical support to explore developing the idea into a business opportunity.

Alongside promoting business start-up the champions aim to influence policy makers within the Universities to establish supportive frameworks and environments in which enterprise and entrepreneurship can flourish.

The National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE) is the UK’s national body focusing on enhancing the entrepreneurial capacity of the Higher Education sector.  NCGE lead on this type of activity and will deliver the project with the financial backing of NWDA.
