Gender differences in enterprise during recession

Business advisory firm Deloitte have found that male entrepreneurs are ‘more bullish’ in their expectations of revenue growth than their female counterparts.

The research from Deloitte’s annual entrepreneurship report showed that just over a third of the UK’s female entrepreneurs are expecting revenue growth of up to 10% in 2009/10, much more cautious in their outlook for growth compared with 14% of men expecting growth of more than 50%. Only one in nine men are predicting growth under 10%.

Debbie Griffiths, entrepreneurial business partner at Deloitte, said: “Expectations amongst women entrepreneurs are relatively guarded at this point, a sentiment that is only heightened when compared with the confidence displayed of their male counterparts.
“However conservative this outlook may seem, growth remains a key theme for many female led organisations. One would hope that as the wider economy stabilises, a more bullish stance will emerge.”
Female business owners say entry into new markets and increased productivity will be the key drivers to boost business over the next few years. Whereas male entrepreneurs consider these areas less important.
