Capturing the Enterprise Potential of Young People

This report by Dubit on behalf of Business Link seeks to improve understanding of the attitudes and perceptions of 14-25 year olds towards enterprise and entrepreneurship. This is with a view to helping target key groupings and strengthening service delivery, especially online. The research identifies enterprise potential in young people across the Yorkshire and Humber region.

The means of research conducted were focus groups, teacher interviews and a survey of 1,261 people aged between 14 and 25 to determine their inherent Enterprise Potential (EP), their aspiration and their actual engagement with enterprise. The report establishes those more suited to enterprise and the influences on this and how the information gathered can direct a future model of delivery for education and occupation groupings.

Enterprise Potential is determined by analysing the response to 34 questions relating to entrepreneurship, interest and ambitions in business. The results show that in general, males exhibit a high EP than females across the ages, young people form BME groups are more switched on to enterprise and employed people have a higher EP than any other grouping.

These results show clear potential for enterprise within young people as well as suggesting enterprise education has a positive effect young people possibly pursuing entrepreneurship and so Business Link in Yorkshire and Humber have divised an opportunity to develop this.
67% of those who have received Enterprise Education (EE) are thinking about Business ideas or have taken them further compare with 57% of those who have not received EE.

Research into outside help for young entrepreneurs established a lack thereof, causing barriers for those pursuing a business idea. Business Link’s suggested solution lies in a bespoke youth based Business Link platform.

By segmenting their research demographic into five parts: Employed (16-25s), School Students (14-16s), College 6th Form students (16-18s), University Students (18-25s) and NEET (16-25s) Business Link has assessed each group’s EP scores, business aspiration and engagement, perceived barriers and information needs.

By juxtaposing this information with each group’s awareness of Business Link they have developed opportunities to engage with each group.
