Yorkshire Forward Initiatives to encourage enterprise

This month EnterpriseUpfront finds out about a selection of Yorkshire Forward initiatives to increase entrepreneurial activity and business start-up rates across the Yorkshire and Humber (Y & H) region.

Women and enterprise

Forward Ladies is a growing not for profit business network of over 3500 women, which provides opportunities to stimulate an enterprising culture and promote self-employment and business start up. The network delivers high quality key networking and development opportunities and events.

Young people and enterprise

The Graduate Entrepreneurship Programme aims to embed and stimulate an enterprise culture through the delivery of extra curricular activity to graduates and undergraduates in Higher Education (HE) across the region.

Working through all HEIs, activities include:

  • Enterprise learning – continuing to add modules and other learning materials to a regional web resource to encourage enterprise and entrepreneurial attitudes;
  • Business planning and appraisal – pre-start business plan development, appraisal and mentoring;
  • Start-up support – financial and business start support
  • Start-up space – range of subsidised generator space and managed workspace;
  • Regional activities such as Boot Camp, Regional Enterprise Awards and best practice workshops

The programme aims to enhance partnership working within and between the Y & H universities with the aim of creating a joined up strategic approach to the development of graduate entrepreneurship and start-up.

The Embedding Enterprise Education Programme is delivered through the Young People’s Enterprise Forum (YPEF). The programme develops the enterprise skills of young people from Primary School through to HE to create enterprising employees, business leaders and the entrepreneurs of the future.

Programme strands include:

  • Primary School – the successful Rotherham Ready approach is being rolled out in Hull; the project involves the development of 13 key enterprise skills in children and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in teachers
  • Employer Engagement
  • Further Education – aims to ensure that FE courses contain an element of enterprise to better equip students with the skills needed for employment, self employment and continuing education.
  • KC Enterprise - Hull FC and Hull AFC clubs to develop an enterprise programme to be delivered by staff from the two clubs.

Yorkshire Forward recently contracted Innovas Consulting Ltd to undertake an evaluation of Enterprise in Education across the region. EnterpriseUpfront will provide updates on the evaluation in future issues.

Social Enterprise

The Business Link Yorkshire Social Enterprise Support Programme supports social enterprises of all ages with a commitment to grow. Activity includes a business assessment with a specialist advisor, a dedicated events programme, pre start-up and start-up investments and a mentoring service.

The Mentoring Programme is an integral part of the Social Enterprise Start Up
Programme. A peer to peer model sees experienced social entrepreneurs act as mentors to mentees who access the programme through Business Link Service.
