Spotlight on The Enterprise Education Trust - Part 3

The Enterprise Education Trust is one of the UK’s leading business and enterprise education charities and has been providing a range of interactive programmes for 14-19 year old students for over 30 years.  Following the previous articles on Achievers International and businessdynamics, this month’s focus is on the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).

NFTE empowers young people to achieve their potential by teaching enterprising skills, beliefs and attitudes to help them lead an independent and self determined life.

The business start-up and personal development programme is a step-by-step practical course in how to set up and run a small enterprise project, delivered by teachers trained and certified by NFTE together with ongoing support from the  NFTE team.

Normally run over one or two academic years, the programme can be incorporated into business studies or citizenship or run as an after school option.  NFTE can be undertaken by any level of student but has proven particularly successful with disaffected or low ability students.

The course is accredited with both Edexcel BTEC [Understanding Enterprise] and ASDAN [Enterprise Award linked with COPE] and students can achieve either Level 1 or Level 2 accreditation.

NFTE helps students identify and develop their entrepreneurial skills.  The programme encourages students to: think creatively, identify opportunities, manage risk, organise, plan, make decisions and take personal responsibility. Emphasis is placed on building student’s confidence, self esteem, and motivation.  The motivational learning style has proven effective in re-engaging students in education as a whole.

Helen Cunningham, a NFTE teacher at Crofton School, London says “I am so proud of our students.  All of the ones that entered the NFTE qualification have excelled themselves.  If you are looking for a programme which will really engage your students, whatever their ability, I strongly recommend that you talk to NFTE.”
