Raceday for Schools
New and innovative approaches that encourage people to become more enterprising can have an important role to play in enterprise education.
When we take into account the amount of enterprising activity that is emerging from an increasingly diverse range of actions we can see it is becoming more common for people to develop their personal skills and hobbies to the point that they can make money from them. When considering the cross section of society these skills and hobbies reflect, the subsequent business start ups are often varied and unusual.
In response to this the British Horse Racing Authority has launched a free interactive teaching resource for 11-16 year olds to challenge their enterprise skills using an unusual selection of simulated activities from the world of horseracing.
RaceDay for Schools uses the context of owning a horse and managing a race course to deliver key educational principles around enterprise and business studies with activities targeted at the learning requirements of 11-16 year olds.
The resource is particularly strong on all aspects of economic wellbeing and financial capability making it compatible with the national curriculum and can therefore be used for many elements of a Business Studies GCSE syllabus. There is also a section in the resource on careers in the horseracing industry for those students who are inspired by its practice.
Students can get a unique insight into the world of horseracing as they learn business and enterprise skills such as marketing, decision-making, leadership and financial capability.
The tasks included in the resource pack are of real world relevance such as designing the most efficient race course, creating an attractive hospitality package and managing their budget.
A modular resource, Raceday for Schools is extremely flexible and can be dipped in and out of or completed in its entirety. Students can develop their skills and knowledge with relevant quizzes, case studies, and animated games. They can then proceed to the ‘Race Day game’ where they actually see the impact of their decisions in a live race day culminating in all the excitement of the race itself.
