Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is over for another year the and enterprising activity across the world in response is at it’s highest. Thousands of people have been getting involved to help individuals in local communities to harness their talent and realise their full entrepreneurial potential.

This year 104 countries took part in over 40,000 events and support from world leaders such as David Cameron and Barack Obama is testament to the success and influence of the week.

During Global Entrepreneurship Week thousands of events were run in the UK and across the world to encourage people to be entrepreneurial. It created mass participation and exposed people of all ages and abilities to quality enterprise experiences – from school students to university graduates and from employees to enterprising people looking to get back to work.

This year the team behind GEW developed criteria which enabled participants to organise events that have a positive and lasting impact on those involved.

GEW challenged a different myth surrounding entrepreneurship on each day of the week and those taking part were encouraged to link their events with these myths and forget everything they think they know about entrepreneurs.

The week kicked off on Monday 15th November when GEW set out to contradict the myth that entrepreneurs are born and not made. On Tuesday we were invited to shatter the myth that entrepreneurship is a solo activity and Wednesday 17th November was the time to break the stereotype of the typical entrepreneur.

On Thursday 19th November the myth to be broken was that entrepreneurship is only about profit and on Friday the week was rounded up by questioning the idea that you need lots of money to start up a business.

It’s important that those who held events don’t forget to report back activities, remember to send in your inspiring stories to the GEW Team and the best ones will get published on the GEW website and in marketing materials for 2011.

2010’s success was without doubt thanks to the involvement of Britain’s top entrepreneurs and unprecedented ministerial support, With David Cameron’s call to make the next decade the most entrepreneurial yet, the focus for GEW going forward is to promote the idea ‘Make a job, don’t just take a job’.
