Green Business Opportunities

In December 2010, The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) introduced the Energy Bill, a policy which outlines ‘The Green Deal’, a scheme that will enable private companies to make energy efficiency available to all at no upfront cost, as the work to upgrade the property will be paid back from the saving on energy bills.

Due to start in 2012, The Green Deal is a radical move towards a low carbon economy which presents great business opportunities across the nation and shows a promising commitment to the creation of green industries in the future.

The transition to a low carbon infrastructure will transform the Country’s economy. It will change the industrial landscape, the supply chains of businesses and the way we all live and work.

Research from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills puts the global market value of the low carbon and environmental goods and services sector at around £3.2 trillion in 2008/9. The UK’s sector is already valued at £112 billion with almost 910,000 jobs.

In line with the Government proposed developments, Operation Green is a major new programme of activity which will support the development of the green economy in the North East of England.

A programme of activities has been launched by TEDCO to provide support for new businesses and ventures in green businesses. This includes: Business start-up support, public sector and green opportunity procurement support and help for high growth green businesses across sectors including: renewable energy and related low carbon markets, recycling and waste management and resource efficiency.

This programme will assist the North East to take advantage of the major growth opportunity provided by the development of these markets. New businesses will provide growth and a rebalancing of the local economy from public sector to private sector employment.

The North East is very well placed to benefit from the development of the low carbon economy, including the growth of offshore wind, micro generation and low carbon transportation
